Submission Guidelines for Population and Development

 

General Submission Requirements

1.         We warmly welcome submissions from scholars and researchers in demography and related fields. Manuscripts must feature novel content, clear arguments, sufficient evidence, appropriate methodologies, fluent writing, and reliable data. The recommended length is 8,000–12,000 Chinese characters.

2.         The journal implements a double-anonymous peer review system. Except for the author biography section, no information that could identify the author(s) shall appear anywhere else in the manuscript.

3.         Please refer to the "Format Specifications for Manuscripts" before submission.

4.         The authorship and order of authors shall not be altered after submission. Any changes require a signed paper application form from all authors explaining the reasons.

5.         The only official submission channel is the online submission system of Population and Development via Peking University Journal Network. Multiple submissions are strictly prohibited. Confirmation of manuscript registration will be sent via email. Authors must promptly notify the editorial office of any changes to the manuscript during the review process.

6.         Two complimentary copies of the issue containing the published article will be provided to the corresponding author.

Format Specifications for Manuscripts

 

I. Title and Author Information

1. Title

The title should concisely reflect the core content, innovations, and significance of the research, preferably in a declarative sentence. A subtitle may be added if necessary to clarify the research scope.

2. Author Information

For each author: Full name, full name of the affiliated institution, city (prefecture-level), province/autonomous region/municipality directly under the Central Government, and postal code.

Provide an English title and corresponding English author information (consistent with the Chinese version).

The authorship and order of authors shall not be altered after submission. Any changes require a signed paper application form from all authors explaining the reasons.

 

II. Abstract and Keywords

1. Abstract

Chinese abstract: Approximately 300 Chinese characters, including core information such as research objectives, methods, results, and conclusions.

English abstract: May be longer in length but must fully align with the content of the Chinese abstract.

2. Keywords

Provide 3–5 keywords that accurately represent the research content and characteristics of the manuscript.

 

III. Manuscript Structure

The journal recommends a three-level heading hierarchy: 1, 1.1, 1.1.1. No more than three levels are allowed. The "Introduction" shall not be listed as a separate level. Please refer to the latest published issues of the journal for format consistency.

 

IV. Content and Format Requirements

1. File Format

Manuscripts must be submitted as Word documents (extensions: .docx or .doc). PDF or other formats are not accepted.

2. Text Requirements

Writing should be concise and precise, with a recommended length of 8,000–12,000 Chinese characters.

Ensure novel content, clear arguments, sufficient evidence, appropriate methodologies, fluent writing, reliable data, and compliance with editorial standards.

3. Figure Requirements

Figures should be concise, accurate, and inserted at the relevant position in the main text.

Each figure must include a clear title, data source, and necessary annotations.

Data figures shall not have borders or shading.

Maps used as illustrations must comply with Chinese laws and regulations, with a valid map review number and explanatory notes.

Computer-generated figures shall be in black and white, with smooth lines and high clarity.

Chinese text in figures: Songti (SimSun) font; English text and numbers: Times New Roman font. Ensure sufficient image resolution.

4. Table Requirements

Tables should be included as needed, inserted at the relevant position in the main text, with clear titles.

Use the three-line table format (simple and neat).

Ensure consistent decimal places for similar data in tables.

Statistical results should include test values; outliers must be explained.

 

V. Notes and References

Notes and references must be distinguished; references shall not be presented as notes.

1. Notes

Notes are explanations or clarifications of specific content in the text. Mark them with superscript numbers (①, ②, ③...) in the upper right corner of the corresponding text, and list them as footnotes (sorted separately per page).

2. References

The journal adopts the author-year citation format (e.g., Zhang & Lin, 2024; Sun et al., 2024; Zhu & Hong, 2024; Zhang et al., 2024). For detailed formatting, refer to the "Reference Examples" in the appendix.

 

VI. Other Requirements

The journal implements a double-anonymous peer review system. Except for the author biography section, no information that could identify the author(s) shall appear anywhere else in the manuscript.

 


 

Appendix: Reference Examples

 

The journal follows the author-year system for references (no serial numbers). References are sorted as follows:

Chinese references first, followed by English and other Western-language references.

Chinese references: Sorted by the pinyin of the first author’s surname.

English/Western-language references: Sorted alphabetically by the first author’s surname.

All references must comply with the GB/T 7714-2015 Information and Documentation—Rules for Bibliographic Description standard. Document type and carrier identifiers are specified in Footnote ①.

(1) Monographs, Collected Papers, Dissertations

Format: Author(s). Title: Other title information [Document type identifier]. Editor(s) (if applicable). Edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year: Page numbers.

(2) Selected Works from Monographs/Collected Papers

Format: Author(s) of the selected work. Title of the selected work [M] (or [C]) // Editor(s) of the monograph/collected paper. Title of the monograph/collected paper: Other title information. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year: Page numbers of the selected work.

(3) Journal Articles

Format: Author(s). Title of the article [J]. Title of the Journal: Other title information, Year, Volume(Issue): Page numbers.
