Submission Guidelines for Population and Development

1. We warmly welcome submissions from scholars and researchers in demography and related fields. Submissions should feature original content, clear arguments, sound evidence, appropriate methodology, and fluent writing with reliable data. The recommended length for submissions is 8,000 to 12,000 words.

2. Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.docx). We do not accept submissions in PDF, .doc, or other formats.

3. We use a double-blind peer review process, and manuscripts should not include any information that identifies the author(s) except in the author’s bio section.

4. Please consult the “Formatting Standards Reference” before submission.

5. Once submitted, the author list and order should not be changed. If adjustments are necessary, a signed written application from all authors is required.

6. Submit manuscripts online at: rkyfz.pku.edu.cn. Please do not submit the same manuscript to multiple journals. After submission, you will receive an email confirming receipt and registration of the manuscript. Any changes to the manuscript during review should be promptly communicated to the editorial office via email at rkyfz@pku.edu.cn.

7. Upon publication, the journal will provide two complimentary copies to the first author or designated corresponding author. Address for correspondence: Editorial Office, Population and Development, Institute of Population Research, Peking University, No. 5 Yiheyuan Road, Beijing, 100871, China. Phone: 010-62751975.

Formatting Standards Reference

1. Title and Author Attribution

The title should clearly state the main content, innovations, and significance of the research. If necessary, a subtitle may be added to specify the research focus. Author information should include full affiliation, city, province (or autonomous region), postal code, and an English version of the title and author information. The author list and order cannot be changed after submission without written consent from all authors.

2. Abstract and Keywords

The abstract should be about 300 words, including key information such as research objectives, methods, results, and conclusions. The English abstract can be slightly longer but should convey the same content as the Chinese abstract. Keywords: Provide 3–5 keywords that represent the study’s content and characteristics.

3. Structure of Manuscript Sections

We suggest a three-level hierarchical structure (e.g., 1, 1.1, 1.1.1) and recommend not exceeding three levels. The 'Introduction' does not constitute a separate hierarchical level. Refer to the latest issue for examples of proper structuring.

4. Content and Formatting Requirements

File Format: Submissions should be in Microsoft Word (.docx).

Length and Style: Manuscripts should be concise, between 8,000 and 12,000 words, with original content, clear arguments, substantial evidence, appropriate methodology, fluent language, and reliable data.

Figures and Tables: Figures should be simple and precise, placed within the text at appropriate locations. Each figure should have a clear title, data source, and necessary notes. Avoid borders and background colors in data figures. Maps must comply with relevant Chinese laws, showing an official review number and explanation. Black and white are preferred for computer-generated figures, ensuring clarity and visual appeal. Use SimSun font for Chinese text and Times New Roman for English text and numbers in figures, ensuring image clarity.

5. Notes and References

Distinguish between notes and references; do not use references in place of notes. Notes: For explanations within the text, use numbered superscripts (e.g., ,,) placed at the top right of the relevant content, with notes listed as footnotes, independently numbered on each page. References: The journal uses the author-year citation style, e.g., (Zhu & Hong, 2024), (Zhang et al., 2024). For detailed reference formatting, refer to the examples in the appendix.

6. Additional Requirements

We employ a double-blind peer review process. Aside from the author’s bio, the manuscript should not contain any information that may reveal the author(s)’ identity.

Appendix: Reference Examples

The reference list follows the author-year format without numbering. Chinese references should precede English ones, with Chinese references ordered by the Pinyin of the first author’s surname and English by the alphabet of the first author’s surname.
